So, tomorrow is the big day. At noon our home study social worker will be here to inspect the house and interview Josh and I to see if we are “baby ready”. All of our classes have been completed, and we are now First Aid and CPR certified. We’ve been cleaning and organizing like crazy. My house is in tip top shape, although I can’t say the same for my nerves. If all goes well, we will be moving on to the next step, which is the matching process, and waiting for that wonderful, magical phone call to come and meet our newest family member.

Adopting through the foster care system is a bit different than a private adoption. We will technically be “foster parents” for some time (6 months to a year) before we can legally adopt the little one. We may even be taking the child to visits with their birth family for the first several months, and there is a risk of that child being returned to their birth family. (Although the risk is considered low, as they don’t match children with adoptive parents unless the prognosis has already been considered “poor” for reunification). But there is always that chance.
I won’t be allowed to share pictures of the baby, discuss the details of the past, or give any identifying information about him or her to protect the privacy of all those involved. But I will promise to share what I can as often as I can, as I will be thrilled, and of course, overwhelmed, learning how to be a mom for the first time.
I’ve been told that the matching process can take several months, so we aren’t sure when we will get that life changing call. But I’m hoping for December, or maybe even January.
I’ll be preparing and primping the nursery up until the day he or she arrives.
Wish us luck tomorrow. I’ll update you all as soon as I know more.
Oh! And tomorrow also marks our one year anniversary on Etsy. We’re celebrating by rewarding our customers with 15% off sales of two or more items. Discount will be refunded through PayPal. Offer expires Friday September 3rd, so hurry!
