home study

So, tomorrow is the big day. At noon our home study social worker will be here to inspect the house and interview Josh and I to see if we are “baby ready”. All of our classes have been completed, and we are now First Aid and CPR certified. We’ve been cleaning and organizing like crazy. My house is in tip top shape, although I can’t say the same for my nerves. If all goes well, we will be moving on to the next step, which is the matching process, and waiting for that wonderful, magical phone call to come and meet our newest family member.

Adopting through the foster care system is a bit different than a private adoption. We will technically be “foster parents” for some time (6 months to a year) before we can legally adopt the little one. We may even be taking the child to visits with their birth family for the first several months, and there is a risk of that child being returned to their birth family. (Although the risk is considered low, as they don’t match children with adoptive parents unless the prognosis has already been considered “poor” for reunification). But there is always that chance.

I won’t be allowed to share pictures of the baby, discuss the details of the past, or give any identifying information about him or her to protect the privacy of all those involved. But I will promise to share what I can as often as I can, as I will be thrilled, and of course, overwhelmed, learning how to be a mom for the first time.

I’ve been told that the matching process can take several months, so we aren’t sure when we will get that life changing call. But I’m hoping for December, or maybe even January.

I’ll be preparing and primping the nursery up until the day he or she arrives.

Wish us luck tomorrow. I’ll update you all as soon as I know more.

Oh! And tomorrow also marks our one year anniversary on Etsy. We’re celebrating by rewarding our customers with 15% off sales of two or more items. Discount will be refunded through PayPal. Offer expires Friday September 3rd, so hurry!

Denise @ A Bun Can Dance - Oh I was so excited to see you had a new post and with the most exciting of titles too!
I’ve been wondering how you were getting on. I know only too well what it is like to be continually sorting out and decluttering the house to make room for the new family members. We’ve not had our ‘health and safety’ visit yet, which is where a different social worker will assess our home’s suitability for children and suggest any modifications. We’re in a bit of limbo at the moment, as our social worker got married last weekend and so is off on honeymoon for 2 weeks – I can’t wait for her to return as we’ll then find out if we are going to approval panel in October or November.
I’m sending you mountains of good vibes and big hugs for today and keeping all fingers and toes crossed that your meeting goes well. Keep smiling and hold onto your hopes and dreams for the ultimate goal – you will be a mom sometime in the next 12 months – isn’t that magical??
Happy, happy days to you,
Denise x

Diane Kristensen - Hi there!
I just found your blog through Cottage of the MOnth website. I loved your home but even more, I loved hearing of your upcoming adoption. I also adopted through the foster care system in Cali about 2.5 years ago. We also did not know if we were getting a boy or girl. Our adoption turned out wonderful and has been the second biggest blessing of my life (aside from marrying my husband). I wish you the BEST during this journey.Savor every step of the way because it will be YOUR special journey and no one else’s! Blessings to you!

marci - i’m so excited for you and whatever little one is blessed enough to come to your home.
we’ve adopted twice through foster care. it can be a tough thing but it is so worth it in the end. make sure to stick up for yourself and use the resources available to you through the state. we live in a different state so i’m not sure what cali gives you but you should have a person who will represent your rights. it’s such a hard thing because you can’t quite feel like they are yours right from the beginning but try really hard to allow yourself that. enjoy every second and don’t worry as much as you will want to. write down every little miracle thing that points to the certainty that the little one in your arms was meant to be with you. there will be sooo many! seriously, get a journal because years from now you might forget all the little things and you’ll want to help that little one know why they are with you.

it’s an amazing thing, adoption. and even more amazing through foster care, i think anyways!;D i know you don’t me from adam but i would be more than willing to listen if you need to vent about social workers!;D
congrats and good luck!!

Hannah - Prayers for your fostering journey. We traveled that road (and plan on again in the future) with the intent of adopting. Unfortunately, the system is so broken and full of heartache. We fostered three seperate babies over a yrs period) and each was returned to their birth parents, and horrible, horrible home enviroments because blood is thicker than the best interests of the child according to the court.
We loved each of our foster babies and pray for them and miss them,
Hannah

Terri Chaney - I’m not sure how I found your blog. I think it was a link on another blog. I see that you’re trying to adopt through foster/adoption. We are in the same process. We are not trying to adopt an infant, but an girl between 2-8. I think adoption is and awesome thing. We adopted our 5 yr. old son at birth. God bless you and your future family!
