sneak peak

Ok, so I am probably TOTALLY premature in showing you all this… I hesitate to even post it, cause I would HATE to jinx anything… but I am having so much fun decorating a nursery for the very first time!!! I mean I’ve been waiting years and years for this stuff!!!!

Josh and I have spoken with our social worker, but our first interview was rescheduled for next week, so we still have a LONG way to go, before we get a call for a baby. (Once the interviews are over, we still have to take the class to become licensed, and pass a home inspection).

I’ve been as proactive as possible, baby proofing the house, buying gender neutral nursery basics, and getting our paperwork in order. But we have been told over and over that it can take six months to a year for the process to be complete. So I’m trying to be as patient as possible.

So far I’ve been able to channel some of my excitement into the treasure hunt for the perfect nursery decor. On many of my shopping trips for the vintage shop, I’ve been hoarding away baby clothes, vintage toys, and old children’s books.

My first find was an olive green vintage dresser that has the perfect amount of distressing. It’s low enough to fit right under the one window in the nursery, and is the right height for a changing pad on top. (Did I mention Babies R Us and I are on a first name basis now?) …lol…

I added a floral wooden tray next to the changing pad to hold all my baby buttocks related trinkets. The sweet little basket on top was actually something Josh’s grandmother sent to us one Christmas with two jars of preserves inside. The wooden cut out handle is in the shape of a duck, perfect for our namesake. (Although I’m worried the “duck” thing will be a curse and I’ll end up with an all yellow pile of presents from family and friends…lol…).

The little green wagon was an Etsy find and it sits on the built in bookcase in the baby’s room. I have a ton of old wooden blocks that I’ve picked up on shopping trips.

And the gray crib is from Pottery Barn. It was a splurge for sure, but my mom helped me buy it and it was on clearance, so somehow I justified the purchase. Who am I kidding, the second it was set up in the room I was freaking out with excitement on how pretty it was. It was TOTALLY worth it! It’s a bit undressed at the moment, since my in-laws are helping me make my own custom bedding. Can’t wait to share that with you all! I hope it turns out as pretty as I imagine it! :o)

The knick knacks on the crown molding ledges are just temporary, as I’ve already changed things out since I took this photo, but I love that I can change things as I learn more about the baby we will be blessed with.

Along the bottom images: A stack of vintage children’s books, including two on adoption, that were a gift from my friend Christilynn, who took the time to come coach me on prepping my home for the home study.

The printers drawer hangs by the crib and is filled with tiny trinkets (which I learned will all have to be removed so the baby doesn’t choke on any of them!) Oh well, it looks pretty for my pictures, anyway.

The teddy bear is from my mom’s childhood. It’s something I always wanted from her, and she agreed to let me have it when she saw I was decorating.

I’m still tweaking things here and there, but overall I’m really happy with it. Let’s hope the new baby likes it too! (And let’s hope my social worker doesn’t think I totally jumped the gun on the nursery…lol…).

Arlene - Sara, I love visiting your blog. This was such a fun post to come across. I’ve adopted two, beautiful little boys (at birth both just 2 days old). It is such an amazing experience dispite the tedious process. Enjoy the nesting and the “expectant” mother moments. It makes the journey all the more sweeter. Best to you!

You will be the most wonderful mama, filled with so much love that is evident. :) It reminds me of my sister when they were getting ready for their first adoption; it’s a very special time. embrace it all.

Celeste - That is an adorable nursery! I hope your wait for baby isn’t too much longer. ☺

April 29, 2010 - 3:35 pm

Amy - I can barely find the words to write, this post is so full of love and excitement that it is clear you are welcoming your OWN child into your house. I wasn’t able to wait to buy things and decorate either, jinx shminx, it shows your excited and loving and want things to be perfect for your little one to arrive into the nest.
I will have to say, that lamp will have to move off the changing table, once those feet and hands start going it will to. LOL!
Best wishes

April 29, 2010 - 3:48 pm

Gail - O.K. then,
Cutest crib ever to go in the cutest nursery ever! We decorated vintage also, kinda beachy theme for our adopted dd. It took 9 months to get her too, and no weight gain for me (well, not from the baby anyway!)
Best of luck on this most exciting time in your lives, what an adventure parenthood is!
You won’t remember a time before your baby was in your lives, trust me :).

April 29, 2010 - 4:00 pm

Donna Watson - you have wonderful artistic touches everywhere– best wishes and hope that soon your dreams will come true.

April 29, 2010 - 4:25 pm

Jeri - If you can find it, look for the book called “the chosen baby”. I was adopted in 1964 and it was a children’s book given to my mom, who must of read it to me a lot, because I grew up feeling so sorry for all the other kids who were not adopted, just like me, throughout all my elementary school years.

April 29, 2010 - 5:04 pm

tara - Looks great Sara!!! And isn’t Christie the sweetest!! She will be a good resource for you…enjoy!

April 29, 2010 - 6:17 pm

Susan - The nursery is darling. Good Luck with the process you have before you. We are just starting our paperwork etc to Foster to adopt and I am very excited and nervous all at the same time. Haven’t even thought about where this child will sleep but I think we have some time to work that out.
Keep us posted!

April 29, 2010 - 7:23 pm

Karen - I absolutely love it when you pop up in my reader 2 days in a row! And with a post about adoption making it all the more wonderful! You have such a beautiful place for your new baby to be that any case worker that walks into your home will be able to see the love that you already have for your child. Being close to adoption myself, I am wishing you so many lovely thoughts until your sweet family is added to.

April 29, 2010 - 7:54 pm

MMW - my heart aches for you to have a baby to hold love and cherish. what a lovely mommy you already are! the nursery is gorgeous too – but your HEART and your love shines through.

Sandy M - Sara,
I haven’t visit your blog in a long while and I am glad that you are keeping well. Becoming foster parents can be a challenging yet rewarding journey. I wish you and Josh a wonderful adoption process and a love filled road to parenthood. Your child is lucky to have found you both. Best wishes Sara!

Lisa Sommers - Everything looks so calming!
I have decorated our 3 grand children’s room
{spare room} in all vintage wood toys and books esp
with vintage dog related items. Sometimes I just go
in there and sit and breath in how cute it is!
I bet you might do the same thing….just sit in there
and breath! How very sweet it is all coming together!
Beautiful!

April 30, 2010 - 3:10 am

joanne nixon - here is hoping that the new baby comes soon…..the nursery looks so very beautiful and serene…i am keeping you in my thoughts and wishing that everything is smooth and quick…you want this baby so much, i know it will be loved…

April 30, 2010 - 3:25 am

karen - sarah, the nursery is so welcoming and loving! has hannah tried to sleep in the crib yet? ;) hope it is a quick process for you! p.s. just so the case worker can’t find anything negative to say, don’t forget to take down the shelves and pics and little trinkets over the crib before your inspection.

April 30, 2010 - 5:34 am

Merrilyn of Nico Moon Photography - How beautiful! What a lovely job you’ve done. How could anyone not approve of you as a mother! … My only concern is the shelving over the babies crib. I would consider thinking about what might happen to items on the shelves in the event of an earthquake. A dreadful thought, I know, but living in southern California I think of these things. I don’t even have a photo over my bed for the very same reason, opting instead for a very tall headboard.
Maybe you could put earthquake putty (I know they make such a thing) on any frames to help them stay in place.
Don’t mean to sound negative, just helpful. I do so love your style, girl! :) all the best, Merrilyn

April 30, 2010 - 9:50 am

Cindy - Sadie, it is lovely and
welcoming. You did a wonderful
job and yes the olive dresser
is a great piece.

April 30, 2010 - 1:07 pm

Leah C - Oh Sara, it’s one of the prettiest nurseries I’ve ever seen! I’m so, so excited for you:) Here’s hoping the process goes quickly & you’ll have a “little bundle of joy” to hold & love…soon!

April 30, 2010 - 1:19 pm

Penny Patten - I really hope every thing comes together for you, what a lucky baby when they find you! Beautiful room!

April 30, 2010 - 4:39 pm

Denise @ A Bun Can Dance - wow! Just look at your nursery – it is so beautiful and romantic – I’d love to be a baby in there ;-)
Meanwhile, we still have far too much furniture to even make room for a child’s bed just yet! There’s a large problem of a wardrobe full of my clothes, which will have to go someplace else…. though I’ve no idea where!!!
Like you, I am so, SO, dreaming of children’s toys, beds, etc.
Wishing you lots of happy times adding to your stunning nursery!

Jojeana - Your nursery is so adorable… absolutely perfect!

I’ve been in the same boat as you. About 14 years ago, when I was trying to have a baby, it just wasn’t happening for my husband and I. We tried for six solid years of fertility tests, operations, medications. Nothing happened for us so we started the adoption process. I know how stressful it can be. AFTER going through all the steps you mentioned, but before a baby was actually placed with us, I became pregnant. It truly was a miracle in our eyes. After 10 years of marriage and six years of trying, we were pregnant! It took three long years after we had our first child to become pregnant with our second. Our daughters are 12 and 9 years old now.

I’m so happy for you and wish you all the best!

April 30, 2010 - 7:37 pm

Sadie Boon - It looks perfect Sara! My son is my joy, and having a child is the most precious thing in the world. I can’t wait to read a post from you about your new arrival filling the nursery with it’s sweet baby smell, mountains of muslin cloths and the soothing sound of your baby sleeping. Bliss.

Casey - Congratulations!! We adopted our baby girl from China four years ago. The wait was about a year and I enjoyed every part of decorating our nursery. I was finished WAY before we had a referral, but I loved going into the room and daydreaming. I think it is an important part of the process.

Your room is absolutely fabulous!! Can’t wait to hear more about your journey to motherhood!!

Much peace, Casey

Jessie Lee - Sara, So happy for you..I cried when you and your husband were feeling so defeated and it showed in your writing! And now I picture you jumping up and down you are so happy! I am in the middle of holding a contest for senior portraits and the girl (she doesn’t know yet, I can’t announce it for 10 more days) that is going to win is a foster child and wrote about the families that have been less than and “getting a new family” that is like family….It’s good to know that some lucky kid is so wanted.~Jessie

Dori - It is so lovely, Sara. There is very little sweeter than the time spent readying a nursery for a much anticipated and already loved tiny one. Enjoy every moment, sweetie! {hug}

May 2, 2010 - 5:46 pm

valerie - HI there, so glad that you are on your way to a baby! The nursery is fantastic…one thing I will mention…call me crazy but you may want to be sure all of the “old” things are up high since many of the older toys and such were painted with lead based paints….I am sure you know this, but you know how babies are…everything goes in their mouths! I am so happy for you and hope that things can move right a long in this process. Hugs

May 2, 2010 - 10:52 pm

Allison - The nursery is just adorable, congrats! Time will fly and before you know it, you’ll have a lucky little one in your home.

Thoma Lou Maddy - Love your nursery – have you seen the book “Flea Market Baby”? It was published in 2003 and is really a neat book. I think it is out of print, but you can find it on eBay. The best of luck to you and your little one! Love your blog.

Danielle Muller - so peaceful and serene!! i love it!!

one thing i would change though…hanging those shelves above the crib is not a good idea…dangerous….not trying to sound like a “know it all”….just wanted to give you some advice from one mom to one mom-to-be… : )

thanks for sharing your journey with us….God bless!!

It is so lovely – I am so happy for you and your husband on this exciting journey that you guys are on…thanks for sharing the great pictures…I love that a lot of the things in it have sentimental value and meaning…that is so great…

emily - I love that crib – and painted gray is perfect. Such darling details.
Blessings to you!

May 8, 2010 - 3:06 pm

nancy - so lovely..had to snicker at your comment on taking down the printer’s drawer. SO many things to think about! My Mom would even tell me to remove the photos hanging above the crib in case of an earthquake! Oh my… best of luck to you both. :)

May 12, 2010 - 1:09 am

Sadie Olive - The items above the crib are secured with museum putty, so they are “earthquake proof”. :o)

May 14, 2010 - 4:45 pm

Ashley - It’s lovely!!! I hope the whole process goes fast so you can add to your family!
I love the crib, and I speak from experience; buy a plastic crib rail protector. I’m pretty sure they sell them at babies r us. They will save your beautiful crib from teething teeth. My crib looked like it had been attacked by a beaver… I know for next time, haha. Good luck with everything!

May 17, 2010 - 5:47 am

Amy J. - Love your photography…very inspiring. Love the nursery… so sweet. My little girl’s name is Sadie. She was nothing short of a miracle of God’s grace. Whenever you get your little one, it will be a gift of grace as well :) Blessings.

Emily J. Ridgway - Hi Sara,

I always love following your blog. It’s really fun to hear your story, and I just wish you the best in this adventure with your husband.

Your nursery is absolutely GORGEOUS! I am so impressed with the details and colors! It is just perfect. It gives me lots of ideas. I, too, hope to be a mommy in the near future. I have endometriosis and have no idea what I will be up against.

Also, I wanted to let you know of a really neat place to find baby items. You may have already heard of it. It is called “Baby & Child” by Restoration Hardware. I love the soft, muted colors. I’m crazy about their nursery decor. It is pricey, but definitely beautiful. :) Check them out at http://www.rhbabyandchild.com {I love the Rustic Birdcage Memory Board, Family Tree Picture Frame, Martine Iron Canopy Crib, and their soft, organic cotton layette.}

Take care!

Jen from Windy Ridge - So dreamy!

June 12, 2010 - 3:45 pm

Erika - I am so glad I found your site. Your nursery is absolutely gorgeous and I am sure any child would love (and feel loved) living in this space. I have a close friend that finally adopted a child after many (MANY) painful years of trying fertility drugs and wished they had done so sooner. They have just finished up another round of paperwork and visits from the social worker in hopes of bringing home another little one to join their beautiful daughter. If the soft serenity of your site is any indication, your child will have a wonderful loving life. Plus, you and your family will be on the most incredible ride you could ever hope to imagine.

Cheers and Best of Luck to you!

Lisa - Hi Sara-
I love what you’ve done with your nursery. This is the first time I’ve commented on your blog although I’ve been reading and following your journey for a long time. I am so happy for you and your husband and the journey that you are on to find your child. And what a special place that child will have to come home to–it is so peaceful and sweet. It’s a hard balance-bringing beauty, style, and fun to a room that really has such utilitarian function. Need a place for rest, for diaper changes (our daughter’s favorite spot is her changing table-we talk, play peek-a-boo, and kiss tummies), and of course, a place for soothing and rocking little souls to sleep. It’s fun to see how many interpretations of “vintage baby” are out there today. Even now that Kate is nearly six months old, I still don’t quite feel that her nursery is totally complete. But I guess that’s the best part about design, it’s ever changing-just like kids. Anyhow, enjoy your moments of silence for now. I’m sure that’ll be filled with sounds of your baby soon enough.
Warm wishes,
Lisa
