junk in use

So with all the junk (read “treasures”) I have been purchasing lately, I am feeling particularly attached to some of it. I can’t bring my self to “share” (read “sell”) some of the things I still want to find room for. Josh on the other hand keeps threatening to have his own “estate sale” next time I leave town. (Not gonna happen!!!).

These frames were a recent find that I purchased from an artist who had stacks of them in her garage. (That’s gonna be me soon). I really like the colors, the imperfections, the grunge, and the rough edges. I decided that they might be perfect above my bed in the master bed room (which also has the old brushes on the wall from the previous post).

I hung them the other night and dangled a few of the rosaries I have purchased lately and two more of the brushes I had picked up (to tie in the other wall).

I can’t decide if I like it yet or not. I love the frames themselves, and the vignette as a whole, but I am not sure I like the new direction my bedroom is taking. Something about it says “Junk Gypsies” to me and I think cowgirl, when I think of the junk gypsies. (My Dad’s side of the family are all from Texas, but I am FAR from a cowgirl, and horses don’t like me).

What do you all think? I need some advice….

Carey - I like Bj have been trying to find the pure butter reproduction plate for years now. Do you have the name of the company that sells these? I would be so apprecitative if you do and could let me know. Thank you so very much, love your blog, keep up the good work. Peace.

merrit - I’m with ya girl! I have many vacant frames with silly things dangling from them. They’re the only objects I have yet to change in the past 7 years in my home. swoon :)

Roberta - Love the lighter (outside frames), the middle one seems a bit heavy. The rosaries are a beautiful touch Sara.

Melany(pilarina’s workshop) - Hi! Oh – I think it looks beautiful! If you’re not digging the cowgirl vibe… I think just moving the brushes out of this arrangement would do the trick. But – that said – I think it all looks completely unique and lovely.

Southern Dreamer - Honestly – I love the frames themselves…but for some reason the collage looks a little empty and haunting..(that might the rosearies making me get that feel)… and something about it does not seem peaceful. I would rethink it…you should have something that is inviting and peaceful hanging above your bed.
Keep Creating!

Wendy - I’m loving the frames! Gosh there are so many ideas as to what to do with them! Aren’t interior designers meant to change their spaces regularly? Maybe try a different idea when the moment takes you. Go with the flow. By the way, I’m letting everyone on my blogroll know that I’m having a 100th post giveaway. So pop over if you want to be in the running! Wendy xx

Cristina - Love it…especially with the rosaries! Can you come do my house next?

Tracy dee - Hi Sara, I vote for mounting little glass vases inside the frames and putting white roses in them!

June 25, 2009 - 12:44 am

Brandee Smith - I love the frames and the simplicity of the rosaries, maybe take the brushes out? I see them fitting more in the living area or kitchen…you will know when it’s right!

jewelee - Or better yet — create some sort of rough matt on the inside of frame three to give the frame more weight. The matt could be made from a found material, something with age. Maybe some striped burlap upholstrery webbing.

June 24, 2009 - 10:28 pm

jewelee - Love the direction you are going.
Love the weight and color of frames 1 & 2.
The weight and color of the frame 3 throws it off balance a bit (for me).

I would…
Find a frame similar to frame 2
And hang frame number one complete with the rosaries and frame between the square frames.

Gena - I have to laugh … you sound just like me… far too much stuff and hubby threatening to get rid of it… and then I see more, get inspired all over again and then want more … but where to put it!!!!!! I notice your birthday is on the same day as mine – 6 Oct (unless I got it wrong?) – strange coincidence!

Tara - Sara, I think it looks perfect, it is different and vintage and memorable..if that makes sense. I say keep it a while and if you find you don’t love it switch things around. I find myself doing that lately, not being to harsh to take something down, and waiting to see if it grows on me!

June 24, 2009 - 12:30 pm

Cindy - I think it looks smashing! I love the junk gypsies and I am far from a cowgirl, just one in spirit and I think that it is o.k.~

Alexis - Hi. I discovered your blog thru Artful Blogging. :) I love the frames and what you’ve done with them. :)

Maybe to lessen what you call the cowgirl effect have you tried hanging a few chandelier crystals on them or scattering dainty glass vases around the room, with flowers? Maybe adding the delicate touches of glass will counter the heavier materials and colors?

June 24, 2009 - 3:58 am

Mary Frances - I love everything EXCEPT the brushes…it’s ok not to “tie” collections together! They look better with the rest of the brushes…the colors and “mood”…vintage, well-worn, is what tie the two together! What keeps your style from being mish-mash is that you keep your themes tight…and therefore sophisticated, but with a vintage edge. Remember, we only regret what we let go or didn’t acquire to begin with…never what might find an inspired home when we aren’t looking!!

jen r sanctuary arts - I like ‘em. Maybe your tastes are changing and there is a bit of a “junque in the trunk?” …. ;) kidding….. Maybe if the frames were all the same color and monochromatic? You’d have the flavor of the frames, but not the contrast?

June 23, 2009 - 11:44 pm

Brandie - I absolutely adore what you have done here! I need to go junking. Who cares if it is a bit Junk Gypsies if it is as fabulous as that?!

June 23, 2009 - 8:08 pm

Amy - love the frames! not sure what i would call it style wise. definitely not cowgirl though, its much more sophisticated than that.

June 23, 2009 - 7:39 pm

ann - hi sara, i loooove old empty frames! i have a wonderful collection of them as well, approximately 30ish. I have vintage rosaries also, draped over antique books, hanging on the corners of mirrors and frames, from the foot/headboards of my antique beds. My husband doesn’t quite understand the frame concept either…he thinks there is suppose to be something in the frame??? i try to explain that the beauty lies in the frame itself and the wonder of what or who it previously housed…what do they know anyway…i love your new theme, it looks gorgeous! ann

June 23, 2009 - 4:32 pm

Jeanne - I don’t think you should keep any of it and pack it up and send it to me instead…are you kidding??? Amazing. I am so in love with the left frame. It would look better in my house though…just saying….

June 23, 2009 - 3:44 pm

LeahC - Love, love the frames, Sara! But, I’m with you…not sure it’s the right look for above the bed…might be better within a smaller space(less wall). Just my humble opinion, though. Because of that amazing “eye” of yours, I trust you’ll find the right look for you:)

June 23, 2009 - 2:49 pm

D’Nese - Can we see the entire view from a distance to get a better view of it? At first glance of the top picture, I’m not sure how I feel about it. The second picture (just the close up) I love the look of the frames with the items inside. Just not sure if I like the look above the bed. Maybe a shot from a distance would help. I feel terrible for even having to ask this or say that cause I ADORE and I will say it again I ADORE everything you do. I think though, all that matters is what you love, what you’re comfy with and what you feel makes your house a home. What ever you end up doing, it will be AMAZING and at the end of the day, that is all that matters.
I want to ask though, what shops do you go to up in Tustin? I would LOVE to know so I can hopefully find some treasures one day when making a trip to there.
Thanks!!

Alice W. - I really like it…and your junk! ;) Although when you mentioned junk gypsy and cowgirl…I went back up and could see that…but I do think it looks amazingly beautiful! I have quite a growing collection of junk myself…and my garage is quite stacked…hardly any room for the car in there…so we park outside ;)

June 23, 2009 - 2:05 pm

lissa - I LOVE the junk gypsies! I think there is something so COOL about adding a little cowgirl chic! But you better be careful or you just may find yourself in another magazine article and I can’t even imagine how horrible that would be. ;)

June 23, 2009 - 12:16 pm

Theresa-Garden Antqs Vintage - I think your vignette shows your style with maybe a little Texas creativity thrown into the mix of it. It really is pretty and love the rosaries displayed in the frames. I might just have to steal (I mean borrow) this idea. Have a good one, T

June 23, 2009 - 11:55 am

Denise - love it! Love your brushes too…….what a great idea!

June 23, 2009 - 11:24 am

KarenSue - I love the frames! I think it’s beautiful-you will know when it’s right.

June 23, 2009 - 11:02 am

Julie - I want my junk to look like your junk! I love coming here, it’s like walking into another world. If only my world had that blue curvy frame!

June 23, 2009 - 8:45 am

Brooke Ahana - I’ve got a really good idea…see that is such an awful, hideous, horrible look you need to remove at once and ship all items to me first thing and I will save you from making such a huge interiors catastrophe (while adding said items to my own personal trove of course). Just teasing, I’m loving it – did you see my post with the brushes I saw in a store on my travels? All the sudden all my old, but still functioning paint brushes are looking real good so I did a little displaying of them in my porch/ studio the other day – ah yet another post idea!

June 23, 2009 - 8:18 am

Sue - Hmmm..I guess I am going to be the first to not be crazy about the vignette. I love the two blue frames..really love them…but I don’t like the arrangement. Maybe it’s the frame on the left side…it is not in keeping with the weight of the other two?
I think they are heavy enough to stand alone personally and would look great individually.
Anyway..I am sure you will find what works for you. But I would have been all over those frames too if had seen them. TFS

Nel - What a great find, those frames are gorgeous and look great above your bed.

June 23, 2009 - 5:21 am

Isabel ~ Maison Douce - I think it looks great! I like that you put the smaller frame in the middle, because it forces your eyes to move around…!! I would say live with it for a while, you will know sooner or later if that makes your heart happy!
Isabel

Marie - Beautiful arrangement! I wouldn’t change a thing. Give it some time, but I’d be surprised if you changed it. Love it.

Blessings,

ruthie - take a picture farther back so I can see the total look. I like it, but need to see the wall to put it in perspective…

June 23, 2009 - 3:50 am

Shannan - Keep it! It’s the perfect not-too-girly master bedroom decor, yet it has an element of mystery (romance!) as well.

June 23, 2009 - 3:29 am

karlene - I just love your vignettes!!!! thank you.

June 23, 2009 - 2:53 am

Jo - I love it Sara, alot..It says YOU…Personalable, and unique…

I had emailed the company and they had the reproductions and I just had not got around to ordering it…Now, I am desprate again to have one..Please say you remember the company…..

Jackie - Very cool! I love rosaries hanging from anything (well, mostly anything) – I think the whole thing looks great, but live with it awhile and see how you feel. I also really love those red striped pillows you have on your bed – I need those for my family room couch!

June 23, 2009 - 2:08 am

jamie - I Love it Sara, I don’t blame you, I pick up things with the intention of using them in a piece of Jewelry or something else and low and behold, its on my body or in my jewelry box. The frames look Great, love the rosaries, I have them on frames too. My husband won’t let me put anything above our headboard, Earthquakes, we went through Northridge quake 15 years ago, nothing’s gone above our bed since, Ughhh Jamie

June 23, 2009 - 2:05 am

AshleyR - I love it! It’s the perfect way to tie all your collections together and it’s a great focal point over the bed….

P.S. I’m coveting the pillows in the first picture ;)
