a rosey disposition

This last weekend I was finally able to get some work done on the house. (Money is tight and my projects are all on hold until further notice or we win the lottery). But I was able to get a smaller project done that made a huge difference in our yard. We built a patio cover. The sun sets behind our house so afternoons in the backyard are pretty unbearable. The new patio cover creates some much needed shade and provides even more birdies refuge in the yard. :)

I am saving the photos of the project until I am pleased with the “after” shot. (There are still some small tweaks I’d like to make… including adding some paint cloth curtains inspired by my friend Heather. I’ve been wanting to do this project ever since she blogged about it in 2007, and now I finally get to!

Anyway, I’ve been spending more time in the yard because of the new shade back there (and the novelty of the new look hasn’t worn off yet), and I was admiring some of the lovely roses blooming in the garden. I picked a few and snapped a couple of images I was inspired to share with you today.

I just love fresh flowers! (I’m actually not that into roses, but they are the only thing I can manage to keep alive in my yard). There is nothing that inspires me to take pictures around the house quite like having fresh flowers does. I was having a hard time deciding what to pair the second photo with, so I tried an overlay of one of my other photos. I think it turned out pretty neat. :) It was something different anyway.

I think these bright are cheerful images are just what I needed for a Thursday. It’s almost Friday!

P.S. I am honored to be chosen as a recipient of the “good junk seal of approval” from the gals at Junk Revolution. Ki emailed me asked if I wanted to accept, and I of course replied, YES! :o) My little shop is mentioned on their “gallery” page. These ladies are so clever with their junk and are in all of my favorite magazines!

They are so inspiring, check out their site if you have a chance or their blog!

I wanted to give you all a peek at what I’m working on…

notecards_detail

New note cards for the shop! I have set aside a few of my favorite photographs for this little project. The cards are smaller “gift card” size cards approx 3.5″ x 5″. Each one is heavy weight card stock with a linen texture and in varying subtle shades of white. The note cards are adorned with one of my original photographs and is blank inside. A matching envelope is also provided. Each card is individually wrapped and ready for your note-worthy writings. :o)

notecards

I am still in the process of making more, and will get these added to the shop very soon! I made sure that every inch of these notecards are made from the finest paper and are as close to perfect as I could get! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

style boards

Ok so I was feeling the creative urge today, and I was also feeling a little bit “dolled up” in my new clothes (I met sweet Tara for lunch so I actually got dressed today!), so I decided to snap some photos of myself. (I always feel so vain saying that, but when you’re dying to take pictures and you are home alone, you make do!) Plus my dearest friend Kasey has a photo challenge that I wanted to be a part of (even though I am too early, but at the rate I write new posts, it will probably still be up on Tuesday…lol.) I liked the way a few of them came out (especially the one with my kitty Mason – he LOVES the camera!) so I started editing and decided they needed pairing with some still life images. So I grabbed my camera again, and captured a few more. Once I started editing those… things started flowing and I was able to come up with these three “style boards”. (Don’t really know if that is what I should call them, but it sounds good to me, and they TOTALLY reflect me and my style!)

me_collage

This first one has a secretive feel to it… I like the lock from my front bureau paired with these two, since they both look so contemplative.

style_me

This second one is my favorite. I love the softness of the photo, and the textured paint from my new hope chest paired with it perfectly!!! The colors are in complete harmony.

happiness

I also totally adore the stacked booked photo in this one. You will definitely be seeing that one in the shop real soon. :)  Mason in his usual fashion was hamming it up for the camera with each frame. He is seriously beyond funny! I have several where we look at each other and then the next shot we both look to the left, etc… he was totally into it (until Hannah got jealous and broke up the shoot). :)

I hope all of you have a great weekend! If you feel up to it, join in the photo challenge on Kasey’s blog, if you let her know you are playing she will link to you so everyone else can take a peek too!

linen lover

Like many of you, I have a love of linens. From old tattered quilts and dainty doilies, to nubby textured dishtowels and washcloths. I will often purchase these things just so they can sit stacked all pretty in a pile. I have secretly dreamed of filling an old armoire just with pretty linens with each stack arranged neatly by color, and drawers overfilling with girly white hankies. I so love when I come across these photos in magazines; the doors slightly opened on a warm cottage inspired dresser revealing the beautifully worn and neatly stacked fabrics inside.  The quilt I have from my great great grandma will get the place of honor. (I can’t bring myself to buy quilts at the flea market I always wonder what gross habits the people who owned it before me had, and if they were icky, sweaty people who picked their noses and wiped it on their quilts….lol… that’s weird isn’t it? I guess that is why they make old linen soaks, so we can rid ourselves of the icky people germs.)

linens

Here are a few of the linens in my collection. I don’t quite have enough for my someday display, but it gives me the perfect excuse to keep on collecting. For now, I just tuck these pretties away and make sure Josh knows which dishtowels are “just for show”. (I have a whole drawer of kitchen items that Josh is not supposed to touch… Why do boys think that dishtowels are for soaking up messes? Don’t they know that they are only for drying clean hands and dishes?)

linens2

I have been looking for the perfect display piece to showcase some of my favorite dishtowels in the kitchen, but so far I haven’t found it. I want something very primitive looking made of old gray barn wood and various size mismatched hooks. (I actually want two of them, because the other I want to use in my bathroom to hang all of my favorite necklaces). I may just have to make them myself, because I’m not having any luck in my search. (But that is a last resort, since I always do better at visualizing than I do creating!) Maybe I can commission one of my creative friends to make them for me! :)

Have you seen the newest Romantic Homes Magazine? Elizabeth Maxon redid a kitchen and shared the results, and I just love it! (I adore most everything Elizabeth touches). It has bits and pieces of the kind of kitchen I would love to someday have. Don’t you just love day dreaming about all the ways you want your home to look? Now if only we all had the money to make those dreams come to fruition!!! Someday my friends, someday….

soul soothing

This last weekend was just what I needed. Josh came home on Friday and we were able to spend some time together. My sister Lindsey and her family came over for a few hours and hung out with us. We got some frozen yogurt at my favorite little shop up the street, Yogurtland (I always get half peanut butter yogurt, half bananas foster with a few cheesecake bites to top it off). Yumm!

Then Saturday we went out to my mom’s new place and visited for a bit. After that we headed over to Josh’s parents place so Hannah could play for awhile with their dog, Ehvie. While we were there, we decided to have dinner later at their house. Josh’s dad had picked up some fresh seafood (ahi tuna, scallops, and calamari), so we had ourselves a little seafood feast. My sister Morgan and her husband Mike even came over. I was so full, I had to take a few tums and sit up for awhile in bed before I could manage to get to sleep. :)

On Sunday Josh’s parents joined us at the Long Beach antique fair. I bought a few goodies: a vintage french clock, another old clock, (I wanted a third, but couldn’t find one I liked), an old white folding tape measure, and a fabulous white hope chest. (Josh got a few goodies as well, a bbq fork, shovel, and some books). And we all got a sun burn! :) I put the new hope chest in the front room for now as a coffee table, but I am not sure I will keep it there. I took a few pictures to share them with you all. I am so lucky to have found it, as it matches the other two pieces in the front room perfectly!

All in all a successful trip, I think. Nothing like a little shopping to sooth the soul. We finished up Sunday with another BBQ. I even managed to stay off my computer all weekend, which was heavenly!
