doors are opening…..

Remember a few posts back when I mentioned I had some exciting things happening for me that made me so happy I actually cried? Well I am ready to share some of my excitement with you.

Back in February 2007 when I opened my online shop and started pursuing my dreams… I never imagined the doors it would start opening for me. My shop started with such a humble beginning and only my friends and family really knew how to find it. After I started blogging a month or two later, I was connected to a world of inspiration and friends I never knew existed. I started getting a sale or two a month, and soon my blogging friends were a whole new support system for me.

The first real "OMG" moment came when I received a lovely little email from Tara Frey. She explained she was going to start a new column in Romantic Homes Magazine and asked if I would allow her to feature my blog. At the time I had just recently discovered Romantic Homes from another blogger and had my very first issue which was filled with french inspiration that was just my style. I just about exploded with excitement and of course jumped at the opportunity. The issue with Tara’s article and my mention is out on newsstands now. I don’t even have my copy yet, but saw a sneak peek at Dawn’s site. To add to my excitement, I am featured with three other blogs which I completely admire and adore. Heather, Kim and Cathy are a big source of inspiration for me and are the nicest people. I couldn’t ask for better company.

I of course ran out and subscribed to the magazine after Tara’s email, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. I then started advertising in the magazine (my first real attempt at advertising) which led to another "OMG" moment. The editor emailed me to ask if she could feature a product of mine in an upcoming issue with a link back to my store. I of course said yes, and that issue was out last month, featuring our "friendship glasses".  It was the first time I had seen "Sadie Olive" in print, and my goodness did it feel amazing! My little stores popularity had a big boost from the exposure, and I am proud to say it is blossoming into that dream I once was too shy to even tell others about.

When I was laid off two and a half months ago from my "real job", the panic of how I would pay the bills and the reality of my dreams quite possibly having to be put on hold was devastating. I was so depressed knowing I would have to find a job that would pay the bills instead of staying home like I dreamed of doing to run my shop full time. After months of dead end interviews and hopeless resume posting, the idea came to me to do some "design work" on the side. This has been a blessing in so many ways, as I have had the opportunity to work with some of the people I most admire all while doing something that makes me feel creative and inspired at the same time. It’s not paying the bills just yet, but it’s fun, it keeps me home, and it brings me joy.

I have had a new door open for me this last month (the day I was brought to tears)… I was contacted by the editor of a new publication by Stampington and Company called "Somerset Life". It seems she was on the hunt for creative minds to assemble a team they call the "Bonnes Vivantes". She explained to me that this was a French term used to describe people who live "the good life", full of creative ideas, optimism, and beautiful surroundings. Or to "live a life with meaning and beauty and authenticity each and every day". I was shocked and amazed to be even considered for this honor. I don’t even think my mind had dared to dream that I would be asked to contribute my ideas to a magazine for editorial consideration. It is truly beyond anything I had hoped to achieve when I started this whole venture. I have accepted the honor and hope you will all see some of my ideas in print in the upcoming April 2008 issue of the quarterly magazine. Again I am honored to be in the company of some of the others who have accepted this role, including: Sandra Evertson , Pam Garrison , Lisa Guerin , Amy Hanna , Hanne Matthiessen , Melissa McCobb Hubbell , Lori Oles , Kristen Robinson , Cynthia Shaffer , Analise Sledd and Rebecca Sower.

My mind is soaring with new dreams and new hopes for the future and I owe it in large part to you. Thank you so much for all of your encouragement and support over this last year. It means more to me than I can ever fully express.

Here is a peek at the current (and premiere) issue of Somerset Life:

a french holiday

My new inventory has slowly but surely been trickling in these last few days. I didn’t really order any "traditional" holiday decor this year, but I did get a few pieces I think would look very chic at the holidays. I ordered a few new pieces in this natural linen and french red fabric. (They are made of cotton).

This vintage looking little bag is made with a flap covering a pocket up top so you can fill it with your recycled plastic grocery bags. It has an elastic lined hole at the bottom for easy dispensing. Recycling has never looked so pretty!

This is a sweet little set of dishtowels, nicely packaged up for gift giving.

A set of four vintage inspired embroidered napkins.

One of two new striped tablecloths.

A pretty petit brasserie tray.

And this set of french notebooks would make beautiful stocking stuffers.

As for the un, duex, trois napkins, I placed an order for more and should be getting some in very soon. Thank you for all the requests. Happy shopping!

oui! oui!

Thank you so much for the anniversary wishes! It was so nice to read all of your kind words. Josh was traveling again this last week or so, so it kept me feeling close to him while he was away. He is finally back this morning and I am loving having him around the house again. His job has him traveling quite a bit more than we both expected, but he does love to travel, and with the hours I spend on the computer working, it’s been nice to have the peace and quiet on the days I really need it.

I have been busy, busy, updating the look of my site, working on design projects, and adding a few new items to the shop. I’ve been cooped up in the house for days trying to stay away from the smoke and ashes of the fires outside since my sinuses are killing me. But it made for some productive days.

Have a look at the shop and tell me what you think of the new look. Here are a few of the new items I have already added to the site.

You can find all of them here. Just as a heads up, I only have a few of the napkins and plates in stock, but will get more soon. Happy hump-day! (Wednesday that is).

3 years

Today is our three year wedding anniversary. Josh and I were married on October 16th in 2004 in Los Olivos, CA. It was one of the best days of my life and despite the rain that made me come to tears that day, it was as beautiful as I hoped it to be.

Josh and I chose Firestone Winery as our location. It offered both what Josh and I wanted in a venue, wine and the wine country surroundings to make Josh happy, and the rustic barn that I had always dreamed of being married in. I chose October because it has always been my favorite month and time of year. Fall always makes me feel happy and I love the colors, smells, and weather it brings.

My colors were pink, brown, rust, and cream. The bridesmaids dresses were pink with a brown sash and my dress was ivory. I asked the florist to drape the barn in fabric which was probably the most dramatic effect, as it blew it the wind and created just the perfect mood.

Here are some of the smaller details of the day…

I had to include ducks since I was becoming a "Duckett", so I found these cute little squeaking rubber ducks and tied on a note that said "Quack to see the Ducketts Kiss". We also had our guests sign a wine bottle instead of a traditional guest book, so we could keep it on display in our home. The place cards were held in place by wine corks we tied with raffia and the candles were wrapped in moss.

Luckily we got most of our pictures finished just before the downpour began….

All in all, the rain made it so much better than I had ever hoped for. All the guests were forced to stay under the barn due to the rain and it kept everyone close and together. And I am told that rain on your wedding day is supposed to be good luck.

Thanks for walking down memory lane with me and letting me share my photos.

P.S. No, I am NOT pregnant… I had to giggle because I know the photos in the last post make me look that way, but I just like shirts that aren’t clingy! So what if they look like maternity shirts…lol… I will share my happy news in the next few weeks.

Girls night out!

Saturday was my youngest sister, Morgan’s, bachelorette party in Palm Springs. We kept it small and just too just one night since Morgan is not much of a party girl. The girls and I left around 9 am to head for Palm Springs and give Morgan one last hoorah before the big day!

Lastnightout

Don’t we look ready to party at 9 am? Notice I am the only one without my "bridesmaid" tank top on? The three girls in the middle are my sisters, Lindsey, Morgan and Denise. Marissa is on the left and she is like a sister to us.

And we are off…. first stop is the outlet shopping on the way to Palm Springs. :)

Desnomo

Denise and Morgan are modeling some of the fabulous fashion we found at the outlets.

We arrived at the hotel (Renaissance Esmeralda) in time for some lunch, massages, pedicures, and some poolside sun and drinks.  My idea of heaven….

Des

Then it was off to get ready for some dinner and more shopping. Five girls getting ready in one bathroom takes some time….

Fun

I think we pulled it off… don’t you?

All in all it was a fun relaxing weekend.  The wedding is only three weeks away!
